Abstract
Academic libraries are increasingly uploading metadata for theses and dissertations to Wikidata. The nature of Wikidata means that ontologies are developed by the community, and editors may choose a variety of ways to model similar items. Roszkowski (2023) has attempted to describe the ontologies currently in use for doctoral theses in Wikidata, but unfortunately has taken too narrow a view of the possibilities available to Wikidata editors, and therefore missed a large amount of data and the largest Wikidata thesis project to date, the New Zealand Thesis Project. While research on modelling strategies in Wikidata can only assist in community efforts towards consistency, it is important for researchers to be careful to allow for all possibilities in the modelling in order to avoid producing misleading results.
