Abstract
This article engages in a topical discussion regarding the training and development of staff who supervise students on placement (referred to as practice educators), with specific reference to social work education. Focused on compulsory placements for qualifying social work degrees arranged by higher education institutes, the discussion draws upon international and cross disciplinary literature. The complex role of the practice educator (PE) is introduced, evidence of the need for training presented, and core knowledge and skills outlined. A brief overview of several regulated training programs offered to social work PEs is included before discussing barriers that inhibit access and completion of training including workload pressures and lack of time. The article closes with implications and considerations for further research and practice. Readers are encouraged to critically consider what is currently being delivered in their context, and if it meets the needs of PEs.
