Abstract
This manuscript examines the use of a Delphi panel as a method for qualitative research. Recognised as an approach that can offer greater transparency in analysis through built in member checking and a systematic process that allows ideas to evolve, Delphi panels have more commonly been used in the sectors of education, medicine and nursing. Opening with an introduction to the method and a description of the core characteristics of a Delphi panel, a discussion of benefits and tensions is included with particular attention to challenges and limitations. Drawing upon an example research project investigating the opportunities and limitations for establishing a national training program for social workers supervising students on placement, the manuscript aims to bring the method to life for researchers who are considering the use of a Delphi panel. Although not written as a how-to guide, the aim is to support readers in their own methodological considerations and research design of future projects.
