Abstract
Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus 2 (RHDV2; species Lagovirus europaeus) is a highly pathogenic lagovirus (Caliciviridae) responsible for a lethal disease in rabbits and hares. First identified in Europe in 2010, RHDV2 has spread to over 35 countries. RHDV2 is believed to have arrived in New Zealand’s North Island in 2016 and has become established in both wild and domestic rabbit populations. In contrast, rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus 1 has been present in New Zealand since its illegal release as a biological control agent in 1997.
