Abstract
Weinhäupl and Devenish-Nelson (2024) incorporated modelled changes in species distributions under climate change with species traits to produce a Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment (CCVA) for Aotearoa New Zealand's (NZ) birds. The authors claim that the assessment is valuable for conservation planning and prioritisation. Unfortunately, we have little confidence that the results presented here reflect reality, owing to: (1) a lack of methodological rigour and reporting, (2) failure to consult with species experts during Trait-based Vulnerability Assessments (TVA) or contextualisation of results, and (3) the omission of critical context from the CCVA.
