Abstract
Sustainability has emerged as a critical consideration in ophthalmology, particularly in the management of glaucoma, a common and chronic condition requiring a lifetime of care. It is difficult to measure the environmental footprint or greenhouse gas emissions from clinical activities because a detailed lifecycle analysis (LCA) is not available for medical supplies, and so estimates of an ophthalmic carbon footprint are approximate. The additional challenge with glaucoma is that each patient has a different management pathway—with various numbers of clinic visits, use of medications or surgical treatments, depending on the progress of their condition—so the footprint of any one intervention is of limited value.
