Abstract
There is a growing need for sexual violence prevention initiatives that reflect the needs and aspirations of Pacific communities. In order for these initiatives to be truly responsive to and meaningful for Pacific peoples, they must consider the unique cultural context of Pacific Aotearoa, especially the generations of Pacific youth enrolled in tertiary education. Te Whare Tāwharau Centre for Sexual Violence Support and Prevention, University of Otago, is committed to this and employed the role of Pacific Navigator in 2020 to bridge the gap between institutional resource and community need. A year later, this role has grown to encompass many facets of sexual violence prevention - including research, outreach, resource creation and professional development. This Annual Report outlines the genealogy, goals and achievements of the Pacific Navigators in the academic year of 2021. A novel sexual violence prevention education framework, the Āfu Model, is introduced and recommendations are offered to help others navigate the tapu (forbidden, sacred) space of sexual violence with Pacific student communities.
