Abstract

Theatre Plays New Zealand literature
The Private War of Corporal Cooper by John Broughton is a powerful, short, one act play set in New Zealand in 1916. When Corporal Johnny Cooper, a soldier with the First New Zealand Expeditionary Force in France receives a pair of socks in a Red Cross parcel from Sister Mary Bartholomew, a nun who is knitting for the soldiers, he finds her name on a note inside. Unaware she is a nun, he writes back. This story is spiritual, dramatic, and touching.
