Abstract
A recently released report on aged care in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) highlights the need to rethink how care is funded and delivered. But changing the aged care funding model is only part of the answer.
People with dementia currently occupy almost half of aged residential care beds. As the number of people living with dementia is expected to double by 2050, preventing dementia and addressing inequities throughout the care pathway will be critical to avoiding a catastrophic overload of the aged care system. The latest international evidence shows us risk reduction is possible and should be part of the plan.
