Abstract

The newly published Dietary Guidelines for Americans have received a mostly negative reaction among nutrition experts. Our Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) dietary guidelines are more sensible, however we do not have any recent data to assess how aligned New Zealanders’ diets are to our guidelines. This Briefing summarises why the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans are flawed, compares them to the current NZ food-based dietary guidelines, and discusses what we need to do to strengthen our guideline process and support our population to eat healthier.
