Abstract:
This dissertation investigates the effects that economic development and the level of openness have on the income and price elasticities of demand for imports. In particular it tests hypotheses proposed by Melo and Vogt (1984) as well as extensions to these hypotheses. After establishing the order of integration, the Engle-Granger-Yoo three step cointegration technique is employed to estimate the demand for imports for twelve countries.
