Abstract
This research was based on a small sample of parents involved in the Parenting (Third Generation) Study, under the auspices of the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Research Unit. Part of the sample also comprised volunteer older mothers with young children from the Auckland area. The research examined the significance of maternal sensitivity, non-intrusiveness, verbal stimulation and warmth, and the extent to which they are associated with young children's cognitive and language development.
