dc.description.abstractLong essay presented for the degree of Master of Arts in history. The post of Western Pacific High Commissioner established by the Order in Council of 17th. August 1877 continued to exist until 1952, and, except for one short period (1880-82) it was held by the Governor of Fiji. During the period 1880-82 the post was held by the Governor of New Zealand, Sir Arthur Gordon who had previously been the first Governor of Fiji (1875-80) and the first Western Pacific High Commissioner.en_NZ
