Abstract
Urban intensification is a growth management approach that has become increasingly used by authorities to address the outward expansion of urban areas. Given the economic and environmental costs of outward growth, it is no longer seen as sustainable to continue to permit extensive residential development on the urban fringe. Emphasis is now being placed on establishing developments that promote more intensive urban living. However, achieving intensification is not straightforward. It is an approach that has been subjected to community resistance and disinterest from the private sector because of the economic risk involved. Intensification is, therefore, a management approach that has been fraught with questions over its feasibility and economic viability.
