For children and adults with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the overarching aim of clinical management is the induction and maintenance of remission, with mucosal healing as a key target outcome. While each individual with IBD experiences a unique disease path, the illness burden may be driven by disease phenotype, complications, surgery, degree of inflammation, and psychosocial impact.
